2008
Sept. 14
We planted the fall garden. We drove to Sierra Vista Growers and bought cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, cauliflower, lettuce, and broccoli plants. Leeks, scallions, beets, carrots, and turnips were planted as seeds.
The okra are still producing like crazy. The black-eyed peas are also producing quite a bit---not as much as the okra, but every other day gets me enough for a bagful.
The tomatoes have slowed down and many of the plants look yellow and like they’re starting to die. The tomatoes themselves are not very pretty, but taste good. The squash are also dying; some of the plants are gone and the late-planted squash are not growing well. The squash are small, grow slowly, and the leaves have that funny white stuff on them.
The limas are curious; they have lots of pods, but tiny little limas inside. They’re still making blossoms. The peanuts finally are ready and we’ve boiled two batches. The eggplant look happy and are making eggplant. The japanese eggplant are puny and delicate.
Long gone are the cucumber and the corn.
